Looking for an Aseprite alternative?

Let's start where most comparison pages won't: Aseprite is excellent, and for most people it is the right answer. It is the more powerful, more mature tool, and the roughly twenty dollars it costs are well spent. If nothing is actually bothering you about it, stop reading and go and paint.

So when does an alternative make sense?

There are a few honest reasons to look elsewhere.

And a reason that is not honest: price. Aseprite lets you compile the source yourself for free, and KistePix lets you build it yourself for free. Neither project is holding its tool hostage. What you pay for in both cases is the convenience of a finished binary — and the person who keeps developing it.

The comparison

 KistePixAseprite
Price14.– one-time — or build it freeAround US$20 — or compile it free
Interface languageEnglish and German, both built inEnglish; other languages via community packs
Layers & opacityYesYes, with blend modes
AnimationTimeline, per-frame durationTimeline, tags, onion skin, more of everything
Sprite-sheet exportPNG + Aseprite-compatible JSONPNG + JSON (the original schema)
Tilemap tools, scripting, extensionsNoYes
PlatformsWindows (ready-made package)Windows, macOS, Linux
Subscription / account / cloudNoneNone

Read that table honestly and it says: Aseprite does more. KistePix does the core well, in two languages, for less — and its sprite sheets drop straight into an engine because the JSON it writes follows the Aseprite schema.

The other names you will meet

LibreSprite is a free fork of an older Aseprite release. It is genuinely free and genuinely useful, though it lags behind on features. Piskel runs in the browser and is perfect for quick, small things; there is nothing to install and nothing to lose. Pixelorama is a free, feature-rich editor built in Godot and probably the strongest free option available. All three are English-only.

If your reason for searching is price alone, take Pixelorama or LibreSprite and be happy — we would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.

What KistePix is, in one paragraph

A pixel art editor for Windows with layers and opacity, an animation timeline where every frame has its own duration, palettes of up to 256 colours, twelve tools, brush sizes of 1 to 4 pixels, a symmetry mode, PNG import, and export to PNG, animated GIF and sprite sheet with Aseprite-compatible JSON. It runs offline, wants no account, has no subscription, and is written in Kiste — a small programming language whose source you can open and build yourself. All the details are here.

Try it, or build it

Build KistePix yourself with Kiste for nothing, or take the ready-installable version for 14.–. Both routes lead to exactly the same program.
